Boko haram has launched its assault against the Nigerian military, killing more than 50 soldiers. In a separate attack, the group also killed nearly 100 Chadian Soldiers.

The island army base on the Boma Peninsula in Lac province, which borders neighboring Nigeria and Niger. President Idriss Deby said that the seven-hour assault was the deadliest against the country’s armed forces. He said

We lost 92 of our soldiers, noncommissioned officers, and officers. It is the first time we have lost so many soldiers.”

As the attack went on the security forces, they called reinforcements, which were also targeted by the militant group. Boko Haram hit hard on the defense line of Chad in the region.

It destroyed 24 military vehicles, including some of the armored vehicles, and took the stolen weapons of the military with them in the speed boats.

Boko Haram’s attacks are a part of the expanding armed campaigns in the region where the borders of Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, and Niger converge.

Boko Haram and its Armed Campaign

The militant outfit has increased its assaults in recent months, especially on the island on Lake Chad Basin. In 2015, the regional countries formed a Multinational Joint Force, and it has been active in the Chad area with the help of local villagers formed into vigilante groups.

According to the United Nations, the armed campaign has killed more than 36,000 people and nearly two million people displaced in the region. The militant group launched its campaign in 2009 before the attacks from its eastern neighbors.

On Tuesday, it launched a series of attacks on Nigerian soldiers, killing more than 50 troops.

According to the Nigerian army, the assault happened in the northern state of Bromo, which borders Chad. In the attacks carried out in the village Gori, the militants were fully equipped with heavy weapons, including rocket-propelled grenades.

The group’s attack inflicted heavy causalities, and the troops who survived were shifted to the hospitals in Maiduguri and Damaturu.

However, after the attacks, the air force was called, and the military was able to fight back. In the retaliatory strikes by the soldiers, all of the militant fighters were killed though the Nigerian military gave no exact numbers of deaths of the fighters.
