Driver of Tesla Model S Car Killed in Self-Driving Mode

On May 7, 2016, a fatal accident occurred involving Canton, Ohio resident Joshuah D. Brown, when his Tesla Model S was in autonomous mode. While the investigation is still ongoing, it has been officially made clear that the accident was indeed the fault of the autonomous driving function, marking this the first recorded fatal accident involving a semi-autonomous vehicle.

After an extensive investigation, federal safety regulators and representatives from Tesla Motors officially announced the car was unable to properly detect the imminent danger on Thursday. Tesla has already reported the incident to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, allowing them to begin a preliminary investigation on the 2015 Model S.

Police records state that the crash occurred in clear conditions at 4:41 p.m at the intersection of U.S. Highway 27 and Northeast 140th Court. Law enforcement also says that the incident happened when a semi-truck and its trailer owned by Okemah Express, LLC, pulled out into the intersection in front of Brown. Florida highway patrol is currently still investigating the crash.

A video created by Brown months before the incident demonstrating the cars crash avoidance abilities:

The following is a written statement made by Tesla Motors in response to the crash:

“Neither Autopilot nor the driver noticed the white side of the tractor-trailer against a brightly lit sky, so the brake was not applied. The high ride height of the trailer combined with its positioning across the road and the extremely rare circumstances of the impact caused the Model S to pass under the trailer.”

Due to the angle at which the impact happened, when the Model S’ roof struck the trailer of the truck, it was able to pass underneath it and continue going with autonomous mode still enabled. The car proceeded to hit a wire fence, drive through a field, and hit yet another wire fence before it came to a complete stop. First responders declared Brown dead at 4:51 p.m.

The autonomous mode that is currently in Teslas is still in “Public Beta” testing. This means that ultimately it is the driver’s own responsibility if anything were to occur while the mode is active, a statement clearly outlined in the warning that precedes its activation. Tesla has made it clear that they are very sorry for the family’s loss and are working to make the autonomous driving system better and safer.
