Drone attack on ammunition depot in Crimea prompts evacuation, bridge closure

A drone attack on an ammunition depot in Crimea led to the evacuation of a 5 km radius and a temporary suspension of road traffic on the bridge connecting the peninsula to Russia, according to the region’s Moscow-appointed governor. The governor, Sergei Aksyonov, stated that the attack resulted in the explosion of an ammunition depot, but there were no reported casualties or damage. State media footage showed a thick cloud of smoke at the site.

Ukraine claimed that its army had destroyed an oil depot and Russian army warehouses in the district of Oktiabrske in central Crimea, which it referred to as “temporarily occupied.”

It is worth noting that Russia seized and annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, preceding its full-scale invasion of the country by eight years.

The temporary suspension of traffic on the Crimean Bridge, located approximately 180 km east of the drone incident, occurred five days after explosions on the bridge resulted in two deaths and damage to a section of the roadway. This was the second major attack on the bridge since the start of the war.

The 19 km road and rail bridge is a crucial logistics link for Russian forces and is heavily utilized by Russian tourists visiting Crimea during the summer.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy argued that the bridge was a legitimate military target as it serves as a supply route for Russia. He stated, “This is the route used to feed the war with ammunition and this is being done on a daily basis.”

Given the security concerns surrounding the bridge, Russia remains on high alert for any incidents. An official Telegram channel advises people not to panic in the event of an alarm.

In light of the security situation in Crimea, Oleg Kryuchkov, an adviser to Governor Aksyonov, cautioned against posting images of critical infrastructure on the internet. He urged individuals who knew the authors of such posts to report them to the interior ministry or the FSB security service, emphasizing that sharing videos of military or critical facilities online benefits the enemy.

In conclusion, a drone attack on an ammunition depot in Crimea resulted in the evacuation of the surrounding area and a temporary suspension of traffic on the Crimean Bridge. The attack caused an explosion at the depot, but no casualties or damage were reported. This incident follows Ukraine’s claim of destroying an oil depot and Russian army warehouses in central Crimea. The Crimean Bridge, a vital logistics link for Russian forces and a popular route for tourists, has faced multiple attacks during the war. Ukrainian President Zelenskiy argued that the bridge is a legitimate military target due to its role in supplying Russia. Russia remains on high alert for any incidents at the bridge and advises against panicking in case of an alarm. Additionally, individuals are warned against sharing images of critical infrastructure online, as it aids the enemy.
