Dustin Johnson Wins U.S. Open

Dustin Johnson won the 116th playing of the U.S. Open over the weekend. He shot four under par to win the tournament by three. He was one shot back of the leader Andrew Landry after round one and he was the leader by one after round two. After a one over par round three, he trailed the leader Shane Lowry by four entering the final round. Johnson then shot a final round one under to win the tournament by three shots for his first major championship.

But this is Dustin Johnson, so of course, it wouldn’t come without any controversy. For a little, it looked like we were going to have a repeat of the 2010 PGA Championship. If you don’t know or don’t remember, Johnson headed to the 18th hole with a one-shot lead. He bogeyed the hole to drop back into a three-way tie so that meant it would be a three person playoff. Or so we thought. Johnson was ruled to have grounded his club in a bunker on 18 and was given a two-stroke penalty. Now the bunker wasn’t a normal bunker, it was sort of a sandy patch area. But they said before the tournament and sandy area was being counted as a bunker. Johnson admitted to grounding his club, but he said he did not know that the area he was in was a bunker.

So now to the controversy at the U.S. Open. Another grounding the club issue, this time with the putter. On the fifth hole, Johnson was about the putt, but the ball moved before he hit it. He backed off and asked a rules official for help. The official told him he was fine and just play the ball as it was. But then a few holes later Johnson was told that the USGA would be reviewing this after the round to determine if Johnson caused the ball to move and if he should be given a one-stroke penalty or not. The problem is, this left everyone with an unknown. What was Johnson’s real score? It wasn’t fair to Johnson, and it wasn’t even fair to the other golfers because they didn’t know what score they were chasing.

A USGA official came on during the broadcast to talk about this. And from the way he was talking, you could tell it sounded like they were going to give him a penalty. So why wait to officially review it and announce it until after the round? It made no sense. And many players took to Twitter to mention their anger with the situation. Jordan Spieth was the first one to tweet saying, “Lemme get this straight. DJ doesn’t address it. It’s ruled that he didn’t cause it to move. Now you tell him he may have? Now? This a joke?” After many others, including Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler, Brandt Snedeker might have tweeted the most accurate thing, “Hey @USGA, it’s impossible for DJ to cause the ball to move backwards!!!!!!! #commonsense.” It’s a great point, the ball moved backwards, so how did Johnson move it when his putter was behind the ball?

In the end, Johnson was given a one-stroke penalty. But thankfully it didn’t matter. After the final round had ended Johnson was up by four strokes, the penalty made him the winner by only three strokes. But that didn’t matter, the only thing that mattered was that Johnson won this and didn’t have to face the consequences of another controversial penalty.
