ECB calls for 500,000 pounds fine for Yorkshire over Rafiq case

The England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has recommended that Yorkshire be fined £500,000 ($636,600) and have points deducted due to their mishandling of racism allegations made by former player Azeem Rafiq. This recommendation was made to an independent Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) panel, following Yorkshire’s admission to four amended charges of bringing the game into disrepute earlier this year.

Azeem Rafiq, a former England Under-19s captain of Pakistani descent, testified before a British parliamentary committee in 2021 about the “inhuman” treatment he experienced at Yorkshire. He claimed to have been a victim of institutional racism within the club.

The recommended sporting sanctions include a deduction of 48 to 72 points in the County Championship, as well as four to six points each in the One-Day Cup and T20 Blast.

During the hearing, Yorkshire’s lawyer argued that the club had already suffered negative consequences and requested that the panel take this into consideration when delivering its verdict, which is expected in July.

In May, the CDC sanctioned six former Yorkshire players for their use of racist slurs. However, ex-England captain Michael Vaughan was cleared of using racist language based on the balance of probabilities.
