Exclusive: Trump says may skip first Republican debate, hold rival event

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated that he may not participate in the Republican Party’s first 2024 election primary debate in August. Instead, he is considering holding an alternative event. Trump cited his lead in opinion polls and what he perceives as bias against him from the hosting network as reasons for his potential absence. When asked if he would be at the debate, which is scheduled to be hosted by Fox News in Milwaukee on Aug. 23, Trump responded with a “possibly not” during a telephone interview with RushHourDaily.

The upcoming debate will provide voters with the first opportunity to see the Republican presidential candidates go head-to-head. However, Trump referred to Fox News as a “hostile network” and criticized them for not covering his campaign events. He also expressed little interest in debating candidates like former New Jersey governor Chris Christie, who are significantly behind him in the polls. Trump questioned the value of giving them a platform to make statements when he is leading by such a wide margin, stating, “Why would I do that when I’m leading them by 50 points and 60 points?”

National polls consistently show Trump as the front-runner in the Republican primary race by a significant margin. A recent RushHourDaily/Ipsos poll revealed that 43% of self-identified Republicans preferred Trump as their candidate, while only 22% chose Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Christie, on the other hand, garnered just 2% support.

Trump has faced criticism for suggesting that he may skip the debate. Christie, who was once an ally of Trump but is now one of his strongest critics, accused the former president of being afraid to participate in the debates out of fear of losing his lead in the race.

In response to the debate situation, Trump mentioned that he is considering offers to hold a separate event either during the debate or later in the same evening. He stated that they have received numerous offers, including rallies and interviews with other individuals. Trump emphasized that the debate would not be very exciting if he were not present, although he did not intend to boast.
