Extreme rain in Beijing after typhoon turns roads into rivers, kills two

Heavy rain in Beijing has caused severe flooding, resulting in the deaths of at least two people and the trapping of hundreds more. Despite the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents, cars were swept away and roads turned into rivers. Videos posted by state media showed half-submerged vehicles being pulled along by fast-moving torrents in Mentougou district. Rescuers have been working to save people and two bodies were found in a river during an emergency patrol. The heavy rain has also affected the neighboring city of Tianjin and Hebei province.

The Hai river basin has experienced dangerous water levels, with three of the five rivers rising to alarming heights. Houses have been washed into the Yongding river and approximately 55,000 people have been evacuated from Baoding city. This flooding is a result of Typhoon Doksuri, which has caused widespread flooding in southern China as well.

The rainfall in Beijing has been record-breaking, with an average of 176.9 mm (7 inches) between Saturday night and Monday afternoon. The maximum recorded rainfall at a weather station in Mentougou reached 580.9 mm (23 inches). The Beijing observatory has issued a red alert for heavy rainfall, and the Beijing Hydrology Station has upgraded its flood warning.

The impact of the heavy rain has been significant. More than 31,000 people have been evacuated from their homes, construction work at over 4,000 sites has been halted, and almost 20,000 buildings have been inspected for damage. Scenic spots in the city have also been closed. Both airports in Beijing have canceled over 200 flights, with nearly 600 more delayed. Railway authorities have provided food and water to passengers who were stranded overnight.

The rain has affected a total of 358 roads in Beijing. In Hebei province, a driver is missing after two trucks fell off a collapsed bridge in Baoding city, and a railway bridge for freight in Shijiazhuang city was washed away. While Typhoon Doksuri is tapering off, forecasters have warned that Typhoon Khanun is approaching and could strike China’s densely populated coast this week. This could cause further damage to crops that have already been affected by Doksuri.

In conclusion, the heavy rain in Beijing has led to severe flooding, causing casualties and trapping hundreds of people. The neighboring areas have also been affected, and the situation is being closely monitored. The rainfall has broken records and resulted in the evacuation of thousands of residents. The impact on transportation and infrastructure has been significant, with flights and construction work being disrupted. The authorities are providing assistance to those affected, and preparations are being made for the approaching Typhoon Khanun.
