Factbox: Moscow takes control over assets of Western companies

President Vladimir Putin has signed decrees to temporarily take control of assets belonging to certain Western companies in Russia. This is in response to foreign actions against Russian companies abroad. In April, Putin warned that more seizures could occur. The affected companies are as follows:

The Russian state took control of Danish beer company Carlsberg’s stake in local brewer Baltika Breweries on July 16. This was done through a decree signed by Putin, placing it under the “temporary management” of government property agency Rosimushchestvo.

On July 16, the Russian state took control of French yoghurt maker Danone’s Russian subsidiary, Danone Russia. This was also done through a decree signed by Putin, bringing it under temporary control of the government property agency.

On April 25, Putin signed a decree that established control over the Russian subsidiary of Finnish utility company Fortum. This subsidiary operates power plants in Russia. As a result, the CEO was replaced and the unit was put under temporary asset management.

On April 25, the Kremlin took action against Unipro, the Russian division of the German utility company. Unipro has five power plants in Russia. The Russian government introduced external management and appointed a new CEO.
