Factbox: Who is Russia’s ‘General Armageddon’ Surovikin, missing since mutiny?

Army General Sergei Surovikin, known as “General Armageddon,” has disappeared from public view along with other senior generals following a failed mutiny aimed at toppling the top brass. In a video appearance on Saturday, Surovikin, a burly and shaven-headed 56-year-old, urged the chief of the Wagner Group mercenaries to surrender. According to a report by The New York Times, based on a U.S. intelligence briefing, Surovikin had prior knowledge of the mutiny, raising suspicions of his involvement. The Kremlin has downplayed the report but declined to answer questions about the general.

Surovikin’s role in the Ukraine campaign is significant. As the commander of Russian forces in southern Ukraine, he was given overall command of the campaign on October 8. He ordered a withdrawal from the west bank of the Dnipro river in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region after recognizing the danger of being cut off by the bombardment of the Antonivskyi bridge. The retreat, carried out by an estimated 30,000 troops, was executed with discipline, and the bridge was destroyed behind them. Surovikin’s leadership was praised for boosting discipline and intensifying attacks on infrastructure, appealing to Russian nationalists who believed he could manage the retreat without causing internal divisions. However, he was later subordinated to Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov in January.

Surovikin’s association with Wagner is noteworthy. After the Kherson pullout, Yevgeny Prigozhin, a critic of Gerasimov and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, praised Surovikin and suggested he replace Gerasimov. During Prigozhin’s mutiny, Surovikin was one of the generals who publicly urged him to surrender. Reports suggest that Surovikin supported Prigozhin, but it remains uncertain if he actively assisted the rebellion. There are conflicting reports about Surovikin’s arrest, with some sources claiming he and other senior officers are being questioned by the FSB security service to verify their loyalty.

Surovikin’s involvement in Syria is also significant. While commanding Russia’s Eastern Military District, he was deployed to Syria for around eight months to assist President Bashar al-Assad in fighting rebel groups. By the end of his assignment, the civil war had turned in Assad’s favor, and Russian forces were being drawn down. Surovikin was rewarded with the command of Russia’s Aerospace Forces and was honored as a Hero of Russia. However, Russian air strikes and indiscriminate bombing during this period resulted in the deaths of approximately 5,700 civilians, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

In conclusion, General Sergei Surovikin’s disappearance following the failed mutiny has raised questions about his involvement and loyalty. His role in the Ukraine campaign, association with Wagner, and involvement in Syria highlight his military career and the controversies surrounding his actions. The Kremlin’s response to these developments remains ambiguous, leaving room for speculation and uncertainty.
