Family Vacation Gone Wrong: Lost in a Texas Flood

Due to the extreme Texas flood, a mother of two is missing and the last to hear from her was her sister who was on the phone with her as she was floating on top of the floodwaters.

“I’m in a house. I’m floating down the river. Tell mom and dad I love you and pray,” were the last words Laura McComb said to sister Julie Shields.

McCombs was away from her home in Corpus Christi in Wimberley, a town between Austin and San Antonio, at the time. She was spending Memorial Day Weekend with her husband, Jonathan McComb, and their 4 and 6 year old children including a large group of friends who all planned their weekend vacation on the Blanco River.

“My sister and I had been texting and talking throughout the night and she had told me around 11:00 that water had started coming in,” Shields told local Austin news KVUE.

Laura’s two children also remain missing. Jonathan was the only one from the group found by rescue crews at a river bank. He is currently being treated at a San Antonio hospital for his broken ribs and sternum as well as a collapsed lung.

As he suffers in the hospital, “he is absolutely devastated,” says Shields. “He did everything he possibly could to save them.”

He shared with Shields what occurred on this devastating night:

“What happened was the house slammed into a bridge and the house broke in two and they had all been in the house together holding hands but when the house hit the bridge and it separated, he got separated from everyone else.”

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is currently on the search for Jonathan’s wife and kids and their nine friends who are also missing. The family has lost all hope in finding them.

“I think recognizing with what’s happening with the weather, we all know and we have accepted that they’re gone,” Shields says.
