Two American intelligence agencies, FBI and Cisa have stated that Iran was certainly behind numerous social media accounts and websites that contained death threats against senior officials responsible for the 2020 election. On December 23, the Cybersecurity, and Infrastructure Security Agency (Cisa) and FBI launched a report, citing that they have credible information suggesting that Tehran was behind the operation.
The statement further added that the cyber operation against the American election system demonstrates Tehran’s intent to undermine the confidence of the Americans in the election system. Meanwhile, since the media projections declared Joe Biden the victor of the presidential election, Trump and his team have repeatedly maintained that there was widespread voter fraud in the November 3 polls. however, contrary to the claims, his legal team failed to provide any credible evidence to back his claims, which resulted in the courts dismissing the lawsuits filed in numerous states across the country.
One of the suspected websites had a note that read: changing ballots and working against a sitting president is treason and added that Americans “should never forget who helped overthrow the democracy.” Moreover, the FBI and Cisa also identified some email accounts linked to the domain and websites, which had sent threatening notes to the election officials.
Meanwhile, the social media accounts involved in the operation spread the domains and called on Trump supporters to name more people undermining the incumbent President. However, the agencies said in a statement that all the accounts have now been taken down.
Besides, it is the second time that US officials have claimed Iran for the interference in the election process. The top security officials in October accused Tehran of sending threatening emails to the Democrats. In the same month, Twitter also took down more than 130 accounts, somewhere in support of Joe Biden and others supported Donald Trump. In response, Iran has categorically denied any involvement and is yet to comment on the FBI development.
