Head of the U.S. government’s project to create a Covid-19 vaccine, said the first Americans to get a vaccine might be as early as the second week of December—if all measures went according to plan.
- Pfizer Covid vaccine 95% effective and safe, final analysis shows
- Moderna vaccine success gives world more hope with 95% effectiveness
Our goal is to be able to deliver vaccines to immunization sites within 24 hours of approval. Moncef Slaoui added that he would expect on the second day after approval, on the 11th or on December 12, that the first people will receive immunization across the US.
Covid-19 vaccine to be ready the second day after approval
Pfizer sent an emergency usage permit application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for its Covid-19 vaccine. Meanwhile, the FDA vaccine advisory committee should meet on December 10.
Slaoui also stated that enough people would have the vaccine for them to achieve herd immunity by May.
Furthermore, he said that 70 percent or so of the population to receive the immunization would permit true herd immunity to occur. That is feasible somewhere in the month of May, or something like that based on our plans.
Following Slaoui’s remarks on Sunday, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease specialist, had an interview with CBS Margaret Brennan on Face The Nation. He said, although he “totally agree[s]” with Slaoui that herd immunity may occur in May, it will demand that a majority of the population be vaccinated.
“If you have a highly viable vaccine, and only a fairly tiny 40, 50 percent of the people get the shot, you’re not going to get the herd immunity you need,” Fauci said. What we do need is we need to get as many people as possible vaccinated.
Fauci clarified on Sunday that we want to be very transparent. He also emphasized the need for citizens to consider the impartial mechanism that contributed to the formation of the FDA. He also mentioned the independent advisory boards and promised that the vaccines are safe and efficient with a license for emergency use.
