Gay marriages first kicked off in Denmark in 1989. Although a lot of gay couples married that year, that wasn’t the case for those whose religion doesn’t support homosexuality.

Gay couples had to wait until 2012 until they could marry in churches.

In 1967, homosexuality got decriminalized in the United Kingdom. Conservative Christian communities in Northern Ireland deeply resented the law as it opposed their beliefs.

In 1977, Members of the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) community soon began to relocate abroad. Violent attacks to LGB and transgender persons had sprout massively.

LGBT people had to hide their true identities to avoid being a victim of violent critics.

The UK legalizes Gay Marriage

Not until 1982, the UK parliament refused any involvement in Northern Ireland laws. The UK parliament had to legalized homosexuality in Northern Ireland that same year as a result of a legal challenge presented by a gay man.

Now, although it was legal to be gay, it was not legal to be a gay couple in Northern Ireland as of 2014. Members of the LGBT community pushed for the UK parliament intervention in the situation. Still, the UK Parliament refused to intervene as the matter was solely the responsibility of Northern Ireland’s parliament (the Stormont parliament).

Things took a different turn when there was criticism against the DUP party by the masses for their open resentment towards the LGBT community. Although the DUP is a small party, it gained Nationwide recognition in no time. The DUP’s argument didn’t last long as many perceived it to be a hindrance to specific human rights.

In October 2019, gay marriage became legalized in Northern Ireland.

The Latest Historical Wedding in Northern Ireland

Two Belfast women, Robyn Peoples and Sharni Edwards, got married on February 11, 2020. The marriage held at the Loughshore Hotel in Carrickfergus. Although to some, this might be just another gay marriage to the Irishmen, this a new script in Northern Ireland’s history. The couple had secure their place history books of Northern Ireland.

At charity, The Rainbow Project, Gavin Boyd, a policy and advocacy manager at charity The Rainbow Project, spoke on the marriage of the year. He said, “Two young people who clearly couldn’t be more in love with each other than they are today. They have secured their place in the history books of Northern Ireland.”

Northern Ireland is now the latest European country to legalize same-sex marriage. The UK parliament implemented the changes in the country’s marriage law. The legalization of abortion accompanied the amendment of Northern Ireland’s marriage law.

Northern Ireland is the 18th European country to legalize gay marriage. Other countries in which gay marriages are legal to include Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, amongst many others.

In countries like Italy, there has been opposition to gay marriages owing to the Roman Catholic believes in these parts. Italy, however, opened its arms to same-sex Union in 2016.

Transgender persons were criticized for having the wrong perception of their gender identity. Criticisms came under the guise that, transgender behaviors was as a result of a person’s understanding of being or not being a man or a woman irrespective of their sexual orientation. For Lesbians, Gays, and Bisexuals, critics viewed them as having wrong sexual orientation or attractions.

In short, a significant population of people living in Central and Eastern Europe is broadly against LGBT practices. No country in central and eastern Europe allows same-sex couples to be legally married.
