The Indian Army said on Friday that five personnel were killed and another was wounded during an operation against militants in Kashmir.

Since last month, when unknown gunmen opened fire on an Indian Army vehicle in the Himalayan region’s Rajouri sector, the Indian armed forces have conducted various operations in the region.

The army stated in a statement posted Friday morning that a search team had discovered a number of terrorists in a “thickly vegetated with rocky and steep cliffs” locale.

According to the army, the terrorists detonated an explosive device in retaliation. It further said that three additional troops wounded in the attack died later that day.

Both India and Pakistan, both of which have nuclear weapons, claim complete control of Kashmir.

New Delhi has accused Pakistan of sponsoring a decades-long insurgency in Kashmir. Islamabad denies this, claiming that it solely provides spiritual and diplomatic support to Kashmiri separatists.
