Former CONMEBOL president Napout to be released from U.S. jail

Former South American soccer boss Juan Angel Napout, who was sentenced to nine years in prison in 2018 for his involvement in the FIFA corruption scandal, may be released next week, according to one of his lawyers on Thursday.

Napout, the former head of South American soccer’s governing body CONMEBOL, was convicted by a U.S. jury of racketeering conspiracy and wire fraud conspiracy, crimes related to the corruption scandal that rocked FIFA in 2015.

Juan Ignacio Gonzalez Macchi, Napout’s lawyer, stated in an interview with a Paraguayan radio station that Judge Pamela Chen had reduced Napout’s sentence and he would be released on compassionate grounds on July 5.

Napout’s family claims that he has not received adequate medical attention from prison authorities in Miami, as he suffers from cataracts in both eyes.

Gonzalez stated, “He is released, but there is some paperwork for him to be able to take a flight and return to Paraguay.”

Napout served as the head of Paraguay’s national soccer federation from 2007 to 2014 and then as the head of CONMEBOL for one year until his arrest in Zurich in December 2015 and subsequent extradition.

In 2019, FIFA banned him from soccer for life.
