According to a hospital official in the southern Pakistani city of Quetta, four people were killed and fifteen were injured in an explosion that targeted a police vehicle in a market on Monday.

It was the second attack on police in less than 24 hours in Quetta, which is located in Balochistan’s southern area, and the separatist movement Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for the explosion.

The group also claimed four people were killed, including two police officers, in a statement.

“The Baloch Liberation Army admits responsibility for this attack,” said Junaid Baloch, the BLA’s spokesperson. “We restate our vow that any crimes against the Baloch people will be held responsible.”

According to senior police official Shafqat Cheema, the acting superintendent of police investigations’ the vehicle was parked in Kandahari Bazaar.

Early indications were that a motorcycle parked behind the truck had been planted with an improvised device weighing four to five kg of explosives and then remotely detonated, according to him.

According to the senior superintendent of police operations, Zohaib Mohsin Baloch, two police officers who were in the vehicle were killed.

In addition to the four deaths, 15 people were injured.

Two police officers were murdered and another was wounded on Sunday when armed persons went for members of the Police Eagle Squad in Quetta. One of the perpetrators was shot and killed by police.

Many militants in Balochistan have been fighting against several economic projects backed by China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

At the same time that Pakistan is suffering at the hands of Islamic extremists, the city of Quetta is embroiled in an ethnic separatist conflict.

Pakistan launched a nationwide operation last week in an attempt to eradicate Islamic militants from the country.
