French authorities have announced that they will gradually ban the use of wild animals in traveling circuses as the government implements new animal welfare schemes. On Tuesday, Barbara Pompili, the Ecology Minister, said that the government’s attitude to wildlife has changed significantly.

She further announced a ban keeping dolphins and orcas in captivity in marine parks, as well as on farming minks for fur. Meanwhile, the leading French animal rights groups have hailed the decision as a historic victory. While speaking at the news conference, the minister described this as the beginning of a new relationship with animals.

Though the environment minister did not highlight any timeline, she said that these would be implemented in the years to come. However, in response to a journalist’s question regarding the timeline, Barbara replied that putting a timeline on it does not solve the underlying issue of wild animal abuse.

Under the new ban, elephants, tigers, bears, and other wild animals would not be allowed in traveling circuses. However, the minister told the reporters that this ban would not affect the local zoos and other attractions.

In addition to the ban on circuses, Barbara said that the three main aquariums of the country would no longer breed or bring new orcas or dolphins. She further added that the incumbent government is also considering the option to build a sanctuary for animals in captivity.

Not only that, but for the circuses owners and marine parks to adapt to the new measures, the government would offer 9.3 million dollars. However, the circus industry criticized the new ban, citing that this will cripple their businesses amid the pandemic and worst economic conditions. On the other hand, animal rights groups are celebrating the move.
