France Begins to Conduct Airstrikes Against ISIS-held Positions

The Charles De Gaulle aircraft carrier, currently positioned in the Mediterranean, launched a number of Rafale fighter jets with the objective of bombarding the ISIS stronghold of Mosul in mind. The aircraft carrier, the only one in possession of France’s naval fleet, was sent to its current position earlier in the month.

It has been long believed, in light of recent terrorist events that have rocked the nation its core, that France was preparing to take a more offensive role in the US-led coalition against the Islamic state in Iraq. A French news source reported that the fleet of French warplanes, 24 in total, will partake in a massive raid that will be conducted every 3 minutes. They are armed with 250kg laser-guided bombs.

The Charles De Gaulle’s involvement will mark the third time France has cooperated with Iraqi and US troops since the 2015 Paris attacks. In addition, the United States announced an additional 600 troops will be sent to Iraq to aid the Iraqi government forces in a final push towards Mosul.

Exactly when the assault will take place remains to be determined, but if the actions of the French military serve any indication, the final push on ISIS’ last position of strength in Iraq is not far.

About Alec Montecalvo

Just an aspiring writer trying to make his mark on the world. Ask me and I'll explain to you why an All-Pitcher's Home Run Derby is a good idea, and how hockey is perhaps the greatest North American sport we have. That's all I got for now. I should get back to writing.

Have a tip we should know?
