French Muslims Attend Mass in Show of Solidarity

In a show of solidarity yesterday morning, Muslims across France attended a Catholic Mass to honor Father Jacques Hamel, who was murdered on Tuesday by two “Islamic State soldiers.” French Muslims were encouraged by the nation’s Muslim council, the CFCM, to express “solidarity and compassion” regarding the tragedy.

Father Hamel was murdered in his church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, which is near the town of Rouen. Services were held in Rouen yesterday as well as in the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Dominique Lebrun, the Archbishop of Rouen, told BFMTV that French Catholics were “very touched” by the “important gesture of fraternity.” Anouar Kbibech, the leader of the CFCM, said of the event: “we are all Catholics of France.”

Among the Mass’ attendees was Mohammed Karabila, the President of Saint-Etienne-du-Roubvray Mosque, who said the presence of Muslims “should be shown physically, because until now the Muslim community did a lot of things that were not seen.” He continued to say that “we wanted to show physically, by kissing the family of Jacques Hamel, by kissing His Grace Lebrun in front of everybody, so they know that they two communities are united.”

Saturday evening saw approximately 50 Muslims join in a vigil in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray’s second church, where some 350 Catholics were in attendance. A service was also held in Nice, at the Saint-Pierre-de-l’Ariane church, in an area primarily inhabited with immigrants. 84 people were killed in an IS-linked attack in Nice earlier this month.

Similar shows of solidarity were seen across Europe on Sunday. Three imams sat in the front row of a Mass at the Santa Maria Trastevere church in Rome. One of those Imams was Mohammed ben Mohammed, who is also a member of the Union of Islamic Communities in Italy. He told reporters: “Mosques do the opposite of terrorism: they diffuse peace and dialogue.”
