G20 bloc fails to reach agreement on cutting fossil fuels

The Group of 20 (G20) major economies meeting in India failed to reach consensus on phasing down fossil fuels due to objections from some producer nations. This has frustrated scientists and campaigners who are concerned about the lack of action to curb global warming, especially in light of extreme weather events around the world. The G20 energy officials had planned to issue a joint communique at the end of their meeting, but disagreements over renewable energy capacities and climate action funding prevented this. Fossil fuel use was a major point of contention, with officials unable to agree on curbing “unabated” use. Instead of a joint communique, a chair statement was released, acknowledging differing views on the matter and the potential for abatement and removal technologies to address concerns. India’s Power Minister revealed that some countries favored carbon capture instead of phasing down fossil fuels, although he did not name these countries. However, it is known that major fossil fuel producers such as Saudi Arabia, Russia, China, South Africa, and Indonesia opposed the goal of tripling renewable energy capacity.
