GCC Summit ends with High hopes of unity and conflict resolution

GCC Summit

Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) 40th summit was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday, December 10, 2019. GCC members are six Gulf nations, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, and Bahrain. The GCC Summit was held to discuss key issues among member countries, including security, defense, economy, social, and politics. The GCC Summit held for the improvement of relations, cooperation, and integration among all member countries. They decided to support each other and enhance cooperation.

The GCC Summit also emphasized its focus on international and regional political and security developments. Saudi Arabia King Muhammad bin Salman discussed relations with Iran as well. They discussed the regional security situation and its effects on their own security, stability, and sovereignty. The GCC summit concluded with the declaration of unity and cooperation among all of them. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2019/12/gcc-summit-calls-unity-hopes-easing-gulf-crisis-191210133956942.htmlThey decided to accomplish fiscal and economic unity until 2025.  Member countries and host of the summit hoped for the best of resolving issues with Qatar because no decisive breakthrough came from the summit to address the Qatar issue.

Qatar Issue

GCC summit’s one crucial factor was to resolve the Qatar issue as well. In June 2017, Saudi Arabia, along with Bahrain, UAE, and Egypt, boycotted Qatar, for diplomatic relations. They did so due to Qatar’s support to some of the extremist groups. These four countries asked Qatar to cut off links with extremist groups and Iran. They also demanded to shut down Al Jazeera TV. They demanded Qatar to fulfill their conditions and end the boycott. But Qatar did not go to do so. Qatar took the issue as one of its internal matters. It would be interference of any other in its matters and sovereignty.

Therefore, the ties are still tough between Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Kuwait tried to play a mediator role to resolve the issue. Although ice is melting down from both sides, they did not come to an end with the issue. That is why Qatar Emir Shaik Tamim bin Al Thani did not come to attend the Summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. But he directed his Prime Minister to attend the Summit.

Saudi Arabia is showing more tendency toward the issue as Saudi Arabia, and King Muhammad bin Salman traditionally welcomes the prime minister of Qatar. They held the summit in Saudi Arabia and invited the Qatar Emir. Saudi Arabia tried to discuss and resolve the issue at their end. They also asked other members to play their roles. All the GCC members were hopeful for the next meeting in a healthier environment. They hope that the Qatar issue will be resolved soon with combined efforts of GCC members.
