The Mayor of Atlanta, Keisha Lance Bottoms, ordered a complete shutdown for Atlanta, as Georgia is experiencing an increase in the number of cases. This is due to the concerns that the city’s health care system is about to collapse.

Georgia’s coronavirus cases are increasing. However, according to the Mayor, although the number of cases in the state is still far from the peak, beds in the intensive care unit have reached full capacity.

According to the department of health in Georgia, the state has over 1,200 cases already. Also, Grady Memorial, the largest hospital in the state, is short of 200 ICU beds since December. They lost the beds to a flood, according to a staff member in the hospital.

The nine counties in metro Atlanta have a total of 1,045 ICU beds.

The state’s capital, Atlanta, is densely populated, with about 6 million residents. This is more than half of the state’s total population. About 1 in 6 cases in the state are from Atlanta.

Unlike in other states like New York, where they use large convention facilities to place more beds, supplies, and ventilators, this is not the case for Atlanta.

According to Keisha Lance, there could be a collapse in the state’s health care system. This may be sooner, rather than later, due to the present situation.

In addition, she said in a local TV interview, and people should understand that when healthcare –hospitals reach the maximum capacity.  Other people will have to come for other issues like a car accident, heart attacks, and so on.

Health care in Georgia

Despite COVID-19, these things still happen every day. She added that these other things would collapse the healthcare system, like with New York, and other places across the globe.

The Mayor of Atlanta ordered a city-wide shutdown. This is a step further than what the state governor recommended.

Until Wednesday morning, before Louisiana’s cases soared, Georgia had the fourth-highest death toll in the US.

Much of Georgia’s health care is lacking, with more than half a dozen of the state’s hospitals shutting down in the past decade.

In 2017, Georgia ranked 49th as a study that showed that the country has one of the US’ worst health care systems.
