Less than a week after Donald Trump’s inauguration, Germany has repealed a 19th century law that says citizens of Germany are not permitted to criticize foreign leaders.

After Trump’s first week in office, a time filled with protests, criticism (from both sides), and disputes, the timing of the legislation is not believed to be coincidental; in fact, it came the same day that the German justice minister tweeted on Trump’s immigration policy.

Last year, the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan invoked this particular law when a German comedian incorporated a poem about him into her televised routine. These charges were dropped.
