The global coronavirus death toll has surged to a staggering one million on Tuesday as the crisis enters its ninth month. The pandemic has tested the world leaders’ resolve, pitted politics against science, and changed the way masses work, live, and learn.

The virus has spread to a total of 188 countries, with nearly 32 million confirmed infections. Governments have taken various steps to curb the spread of the virus by imposing various social distancing measures and lockdowns.

According to the data compiled by John Hopkins University, as of Tuesday world has recorded more than one million fatalities, with health experts insisting that the real number of deaths and fatalities could much higher than what is being reported, citing beleaguered health care systems and governance in many countries.

Moreover, the fatality rate continues to mount on a daily basis, nearly 5,000 deaths are reported on average. Several European countries are being hit by new infections, and health experts also fear a second wave in the US. Meanwhile, it remains the worst affected part of the country and counts for every one out of five deaths.

According to the data compiled by john Hopkins University, the US, Brazil, and India make up half of the total global coronavirus death toll. As of Monday, the US has recorded a total of 205,00 fatalities followed by Brazil with 141,700, and India with more than 95,000.

António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, has called this grim milestone a mind-numbing figure. Meanwhile, many efforts to develop an effective vaccine are underway, however, the WHO has already warned that the global death toll could hit two million before any vaccine is developed.

The number in America is far more than any other country across the world, even though, unlike developing countries, it has all the resources to give an effective response to the outbreak. But critics and experts have called on the incumbent administration for its response to the crisis.

Meanwhile, the coronavirus infections across India are rising rapidly. Earlier, in September, the health authorities recorded nearly 90,000 cases in a day. As of Tuesday, the confirmed cases in the South Asian country has surged to a whopping six million. But given the size of India’s population, it has a relatively lower death rate as compared to the US and Brazil.

In Latin America, Brazil remains the country with the highest number of infections. It has recorded a total of 4.7 million cases so far. Meanwhile, in other parts of the region, the infections are also rising rapidly. Argentina has recorded 700,000 confirmed cases. According to the latest tallies, in Africa, the health authorities have recorded a total of 1.5 million infections with more than 35,000 fatalities.
