Golden Globes 2020, the first major awards gala of the year, shocked the audience by naming the war epic 1917 as the Best Motion Picture Drama. On the other hand, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, directed by Quentin Tarantino, won the Best Motion Picture in Musical/Comedy category. Joaquin Phoenix won the best actor for his outstanding performance in the movie “Joker.”

1917 follows the story of two British soldiers through the trenches in World War 1, and the film is made in such a way which looks like a one continuous two-hour long shot. The director Sam Mendes who previously directed movies like Skyfall, was himself stunned with the achievement as he bested top directors like Scorsese and Tarantino.

Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, an homage to the 1960’s Hollywood, bagged most of the awards on the night, with three awards in total. Tarantino won the best screenplay, and Brad Pitt bagged the best supporting actor for his role in as the friend and stuntman Cliff Booth.

The most acclaimed Palme d’Or winning South Korean film “Parasite” took home the award for best foreign-language film. Awkwafina became the first Asian actress to win the best actress in a comedy for The Farewell.

But the most shocking event of the evening was that of Martin Scorses’s much-vaunted Netflix crime saga The Irishman went home empty-handed.

Netflix led the Golden Globes 2020 with 34 nominations across film and TV categories. Most noted is Noah Baumbach’s divorce drama Marriage Story came up with six nominations, but only Laura Dern took home the best-supporting actress. Martin Scorses’s mobster film The Irishman had five nominations. But both were up against the war epic 1917, Joker, and The Two Popes in the best drama category.

The show was hosted by comedian Ricky Gervias for the fifth time, who delivered an expletive-filled monologue that poked fun towards the Hollywood elites. This year’s Golden Globe  featured climate change, Australian Wildfire, drunk speeches,

One of the most memorable moments of the award ceremony was Joaquin Phoenix’s expletives laden acceptance speech, where he called for climate change.

Russell Crowe bagged the best acting award but couldn’t attend the ceremony because he’s battling the bushfire devastation in Australia. Olivia Colman took the best actress in drama series for The Crown. For TV, Amazon’s Fleabag, HBO’s Succession, and Chernobyl, each won two awards.
