Google has recently been attempting to diversify themselves in the tech industry by making a push to produce hardware. The international tech giant seeks to further this venture by manufacturing their own smart-phone in-house.
Currently, Google has (as far as hardware goes) the Chrome Books, Google Glass, and Chromecast. Everything else the company posses as far as tablets, phones, computers, and smart watches go underneath the Nexus brand. The Nexus products are manufactured by LG and Huawei and only use an Android/Google OS. With this recent announcement, it seems that Google is attempting to change that.
We also know that Google is continuing to work on project Aura. However, the company has released very little information on how the development of the modular phone is progressing.
The release of a new phone from a company as large as Google has industry insiders claiming this could spell trouble for the iPhone. Currently, the two major mainstream options for phones are either an iPhone or a Samsung Galaxy. The introduction of a thorough breed Google phone will likely give consumers a third mainstream option, causing some less than loyal Apple or Samsung users to convert.
Overall, very little is known about the phone Google has in store for us. We have no idea what specifications it will contain, what it will look like or if it will be released under the Nexus brand. All we currently know is that there is indeed Google phone on the way. As consumers this can only mean good things when there’s competition in a market, it usually means better products, better prices, and more innovation. Currently, the phone is slated to launch late this year.
