Greenland is not for sale: Trump's suggestion incurs politicians wrath

“Greenland is not for sale,” was the swift response from its foreign minister to Trump, who has recently suggested to purchase Greenland, the largest island of the world. Reuters quoted Ane Lone Bagger as saying that, “We are open for business but we are not for sale”.

President Trump had earlier discussed casually with his advisors that the United States consider purchasing Greenland, the island that belongs to Denmark.

The immediate reactions from the politicians by now must have made it clear to Trump that Greenland is not for sale. As one such response was from the former PM Lars Lokke Rasmussen who said on Twitter that, “It has to be an April Fool’s joke. Totally out of season.”

“If he is truly contemplating this, then this is the final proof that he has gone mad,” were the remarks from the Foreign Affairs spokesman for the Danish People’s Party, according to the Danish Broadcasting Corporation.

Why Trump Do this?

Every now and then, Trump does such an act as which casts doubts over his sanity. In the preceding months also, it was his visit to North Korea that surprised not only the world but also the unwelcoming host Kim himself. However, the North-Korea visit was an act in good faith. But Trump’s recent suggestion of purchasing such a massive territory as Greenland, with a unique geo-strategic importance is simply insane. The curious situation, in which there is no seller interested to complete the purchase.

However, the US President’s idea of purchasing Greenland, which also might be in good faith, did not go down well with the Scandinavian country. The leaders of the island too emphatically rejected the idea, making it clear to the President Trump that Greenland is not for sale.

Interestingly, the President’s private remarks were leaked to media as he prepares to visit Denmark next month. Apparently, it seems a deliberate leak, possibly to gauge the public opinion in Copenhagen.

The Trump suggestion went as unpopular in Denmark as in the Greenland. “It’s a ‘no thanks’ from here,” said Aaja Chemnitz Larsen, who is an MP from the second largest party from Greenland. Speaking to Berlingske newspaper, she said that it would be better for Greenland to stay with Denmark and be granted independence gradually. She added that US purchased Greenland, our welfare system would be dismantled… we would be crushed. She said she knows this as she had lived in the US.

Why Greenland is Important?

Greenland is world’s largest island after Australia. Since Australia falls in the category of a continent, Greenland takes the liberty to be identified as the largest island. It is strategically located between the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. With a 2.16 sq. km wide territorial area whose 80% mass is covered in ice, the Greenland is host to around 56000 inhabitants. Despite the autonomy and home rule, the island is administered by Copenhagen which is responsible for Greenland’s defense and foreign affairs.
