Griner named WNBA All-Star for ninth time

On Sunday, Brittney Griner, the center for the Phoenix Mercury, was named a WNBA All-Star for the ninth time. This comes just over six months after she was released from a Russian jail. Before the season began, Griner had warned that it would take some time for her to regain her full abilities after spending 10 months in Russian custody. However, she has exceeded her own expectations and is currently ranked ninth in the league for average points per game.

Despite the Mercury’s struggles this season, with only two wins and 10 losses, Griner has been a standout player, averaging 19.1 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per game. She is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and has proven herself to be a force to be reckoned with on the court.

The All-Star Game, which is scheduled for July 15 in Las Vegas, will be led by captains A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces and Breanna Stewart of the New York Liberty. In addition, Aliyah Boston of the Indiana Fever, who was the first overall pick in the 2023 draft, has become the first rookie since 2014 to earn an All-Star selection.
