Hostage Situation in Bangladesh, More Information on ISIS Claiming Responsibility

As we have reported, armed terrorists held at least 35 people hostage at a cafe in Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka. Police stormed the restaurant, ending the 10-hour standoff. As previously reported, the numbers remain the same: six people have been reported dead, and 13 have been rescued.

LT. Col. Tuhin Mohammad Masud, commander of the Rapid Action Battalion, told The Associated Press “we have gunned down at least six terrorists and the main building is cleared but the operation is still going on.”

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina condemned the attack and stated that one militant was arrested.

ISIS has claimed responsibility for the terror attack through their social media platforms.

By targeting Bangladesh, a small country that is home to at least 150 million Muslims, and during the last week of Ramadan, a holy month observed by Muslims around the world, shows that ISIS has no regard for Muslims or non-Muslims alike.

According to CNN, police have exchanged fire with the gunmen, which resulted in the attackers throwing explosives at the officers.

A bystander, Ataur Rahman, who was in his office about 200 meters from the cafe told CNN that he heard a series of gunshots and “thought it might be an attack somewhere nearby by local thugs” but then Rahman immediately realized what the situation is when he heard the gunmen shouting, “Allahu Akbar.”

ISIS claims that they are responsible for a series of attacks in Bangladesh in the past, but the country’s government denied their claims and states that there is no ISIS presence in the country.

Although ISIS has claimed the attack through their media affiliates, a U.S. official familiar with intelligence thinking told CNN’S Barbara Starr that based on past operations, the attack is more likely to be from al Qaeda, not ISIS. This is all preliminary analysis, it has yet to be concluded who is in charge of the current attacks.

The U.S. Embassy is less than a mile away from the attacks. Officials have sent out a message through their media platform warning residents of the shooting and asking them to remain in shelter and to monitor the news.

There has been a recent wave of murders across Bangladesh targeting secular bloggers, academics and religious minority. A nationwide crackdown was in place and the government has arrested more than 14,000 people. Although none are believed to be Islamic extremists.

More as story unfolds.
