Op-Ed; How to be Proud Being Unpopular

While time is passing by, each person is trying to reach what is called “popularity.” If you think you are not interested, then you are wrong. There is still a part of you that wants to be popular or famous because you want to improve yourself relative to people around you, so no one hates being famous.

Reflecting back to my childhood memories, I remember that my sister, who is younger than me by one year, used to feel jealous of me, which made me feel like I was famous and filled me with happiness at that time. Nowadays, people follow paths that lead to popularity. What differentiates them is the choices they make. These choices are different from the ones they used to make in the past.

Cooks, for example, would not spend time taking cooking classes to improve their skills in order to reach their future goals. Instead, they would open a new business directly through social media. All he or she would need is an account and a phone number to start selling their recipes to people or even providing delivery services in the future. And yes, you can make a lot of money just following these basic steps.

If you sold one recipe for five dollars a day, then by the end of the month you would make approximately $150, which is good if you consider cooking a hobby. Plus, people will get to know you more and tell other people about your business, and then here we go, you are suddenly famous.

The same thing would happen if you were an artist. You want people to get to see your work. These days, artists would not take the long way to become famous since we are in the modern generation. Artists can publish their work through social media content like Instagram or Tumblr. If you are not into cooking or being an artist, you may create your own Youtube channel and share your life details if that would make you feel comfortable. If you are good at attracting people, the number of your followers will increase and people will want to know more about you, which would lead them to call you a Youtuber, which is another word for “famous” these days.

The question is, what if you were born into a family where all of them have a certain hobby except you? Your mother, sisters, and brothers are all pressuring one hobby like drawing. I personally grew up with a family of that kind. Believe it, it’s annoying sometimes, especially if people constantly ask you questions like “all of you family members are artists, then what are you good at?” It is actually like asking someone, “why are you still single?”

Once they know that there is actually nothing to say about it, they will give you that look as if you were breaking the rules or something. Now, there is an answer for the question. We are all born different, so our hobbies are not the same.

All that you need to keep in mind is to not let your present affect your future just because of what others say about you. As long as you are happy with your life, then let it go. Also, not being popular or good at something does not mean you have no plan for your life or future, but it means that you need to give it a little bit of time to figure out what your strengths are.
