How to Survive College if You’re Lazy or Unmotivated

College is not the greatest experience for everyone. Not everyone is in the top 10 percent of their class. Not everyone is a superstar athlete. Not everyone is popular and smart. There are those who want to get through four years despite personal drawbacks. Here are some tips on how to survive college if you’re lazy or unmotivated:

1. Schedule classes at a later time.

Although you may not get first priority, try your best to get the classes you need at a later time. Laziness and procrastination make you late for classes. Classes later in the day allow you to sleep in and/or allow a more suitable commute time. Sleeping at night knowing you don’t have to wake up bright and early will probably allow you to be happier and get better quality sleep.

2. Write everything down.

For a lazy person, it’s just so much easier to tell yourself that you’ll remember everything. But soon they’ll realize that it doesn’t always work. Forgetting assignments or worse, tests can be a silly mistake that can cost you. Investing in a planner or writing things down in a diary will help this problem.

3. Get to know your professors.

Going to a larger college or university can be intimidating. This can make it especially difficult to survive college if you’re lazy. It becomes easy to blend in with everyone. But everyone else might not need the extra push. Getting to know your professors is a daunting task for someone who’d rather not engage in social or academic relationships. However, getting over that hump will allow for networking, future recommendations, and getting help when needed.

4. Recognize your weaknesses and get help.

Aside from getting to know your professors, you need to get help from tutoring or available resources. For someone lazy, it’s annoying to find time to get extra help. It’s easier to go home and binge watch your favorite show. However, to be successful, you have to find that time. When making a schedule, try finding a bigger gap in between classes, so that you can get help.

5. Find a buddy.

Going through college alone is very difficult. Although laziness can be overcome, it tends to rear its ugly head every now and then. In those instances, having a friend to back you up is what you need. A friend that can share notes or help you study if needed. Of course, you can’t depend on someone else for your own success, but a little friendly help never hurt anyone.

There’s nothing in high school that appropriately prepares you for the grueling college life. With high school acting as training wheels, punishing laziness with detentions or extra assignments, it’s not nearly as frustrating when there’s no one to hold your hand through college. Endless studying, countless all-nighters, and limited social life are not something one can prepare for. Laziness and lack of motivation only add to the misery, unless you take proper advances towards succeeding.
