India Bans Export of Drugs amidst Coronavirus Fears

World’s Largest Drug Supplier, India curbs export to 200 countries as it reports 28 coronavirus cases including 14 Italian tourists.

As India reported new cases of coronavirus this week with the total infected persons amounting to 28, the authorities are scrambling to prevent an outbreak in the nation through stepping up screening measures and beefing up healthcare facilities for the confirmed and suspected cases of the virus.

India restricts export of 26 Key Drugs to U.S., Europe & other countries

In an attempt to prevent any drug shortages in the wake of the increasing spread of coronavirus, the government has curbed the export of Key Drugs from India. India, which is the world’s leading supplier of generic drugs, limited the supply of 26 pharmaceutical ingredients. It also restricted the export of common medicines such as the commonly used pain reliever Paracetamol, antibiotics, hormones, and some vitamins.

Although the drug committee & the department of pharmaceuticals has mentioned that there is no need to panic as India has enough stock of APIs(Active pharmaceutical ingredient), which will last for two-to-three months for manufacturing drug formulations.

The shutdown of Chinese Pharma companies made India scarce of APIs

Due to the Chinese outbreak of coronavirus and the shutdown of operations by Chinese companies, Indian pharmacy companies, which import two-thirds of its APIs from the former, were anticipating scarce supplies in the coming months. However, as China is heading towards stabilization in the coronavirus crisis, the Chinese pharmaceutical companies have partially resumed operations, excluding the companies in Hubei province, which I the epicenter of the deadly virus. According to sources, the Chinese companies are willing to export to India, but the logistics sector is pending recommencement.

Italy has reported 79 deaths and the cases outside China continue to grow.
