India drop Pujara for Windies tour, Jaiswal and Gaikwad get test call-ups

On June 23, India decided to exclude Cheteshwar Pujara, a top-order batsman, from the upcoming two-test tour of West Indies in July. Instead, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal were selected after their impressive performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Pujara, who has played over 100 tests, was dropped due to his poor form, having scored only 211 runs in his last six matches with just one half-century. This creates an opportunity for Gaikwad or Jaiswal to step in if Shubman Gill continues to open the batting. Jaiswal, who scored the fastest IPL fifty in 13 balls this season, finished among the top five run-getters with 625 runs during the two-month tournament, while Gaikwad finished with 590 runs. Gaikwad also made headlines in November when he hit seven sixes in an over in a first-class match for his team Maharashtra. Ajinkya Rahane, India’s top scorer in the World Test Championship final loss to Australia, has retained his place and will be the vice-captain.

The Caribbean tour will begin with the first test from July 12-16 in Dominica, followed by the second test in Trinidad from July 20-24. India also announced its one-day international squad for a three-match series in Barbados and Trinidad, while the squad for five Twenty20 matches will be announced later. The test squad includes Rohit Sharma as captain, Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Virat Kohli, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ajinkya Rahane as vice-captain, KS Bharat as wicket-keeper, Ishan Kishan as wicket-keeper, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Axar Patel, Mohammed Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Jaydev Unadkat, and Navdeep Saini. The ODI squad consists of Rohit Sharma as captain, Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Virat Kohli, Surya Kumar Yadav, Sanju Samson as wicket-keeper, Ishan Kishan as wicket-keeper, Hardik Pandya as vice-captain, Shardul Thakur, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat, Mohammed Siraj, Umran Malik, and Mukesh Kumar. The article was reported by Rohith Nair in Bengaluru and edited by Christian Radnedge.
