India police probe bomb blasts that killed two in Kerala

A man claiming to be a former member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses was detained for questioning about his alleged involvement in setting off homemade bombs at a meeting of the group in the southern Indian state of Kerala on Sunday, killing two women and injuring dozens of other people, police said. Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan confirmed that a second woman had died and that 17 people were in intensive care, with five in critical condition. Health minister Veena George also stated that a 12-year-old girl with 95% burns was in critical condition. The suspect, Dominic Martin, posted a video on Facebook claiming responsibility for the attacks before surrendering to the police. He is currently being questioned, but his arrest has not been recorded yet. The investigation is ongoing to determine the veracity of his statement and his involvement in the case. The incident occurred during a Jehovah’s Witnesses convention in Kalamassery, and Martin was not a registered member of the group, according to TA Sreekumar, a regional spokesperson for the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Sreekumar confirmed that there were at least two big explosions at the convention center. In his Facebook video, Martin explained that he carried out the bomb explosion because he believed the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ teachings were “antinational” and had tried to discuss his concerns with the group in the past. Preliminary investigation revealed that an improvised explosive device was used. The Chief Minister assured that the police were taking the incident seriously and a special team of 20 members was investigating the case. The Jehovah’s Witnesses are an international Christian denomination with about 60,000 followers in India.
