In the Indian city of Indore, a concrete slab covering the roof of a stepwell at a temple complex fell. It killed worshipers who had come to celebrate the Hindu festival of Ram Navami, according to officials.

Ilayaraja T, a senior local government official, told said that drowning may have been the major cause of death. The pit was 60 feet deep and filled with water.

Steps and niches provide access to water in ancient stepwells, which may be found across India. Several of these buildings are many centuries old.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, the state in which Indore is located, told reporters late Thursday. “The stepwell was covered, but the slab covering it collapsed as a result of the crowd and added pressure.”

Illayaraja said that officials were investigating the reason of the collapse and had just completed their search and rescue operations.

Scores of army and rescue forces worked diligently all day on Thursday to clean the well of debris and rescue anybody who had fallen in.

According to him, there were around 80 people in the building at the accident.

Accidents and stampedes often occur at crowded holy places in India due to poor crowd control and space.

In a statement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sympathy for the deaths and pledged compensation.
