India wants to host summer Games in 2036, says PM Modi

India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, expressed India’s interest in hosting the Olympic Games in 2036 during the opening ceremony of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) session in Mumbai. Despite never having hosted the Olympics before, Delhi did host the Commonwealth Games in 2010. Modi stated that India is determined to organize the Olympics in 2036, as it is the long-standing dream and aspiration of 1.4 billion Indians. He emphasized the importance of collaboration and support from the IOC, expressing confidence in India’s ability to secure their backing.

India is not the only country eyeing future Olympic Games. Paris has been selected to host the 2024 summer Olympics, while Los Angeles will host the 2028 Games. Brisbane, Australia, has been chosen as the host city for the 2032 Olympics. India has been making significant strides in the world of sports, finishing fourth in the Asian Games with a national record of 28 gold medals and over 100 medals overall. The country also achieved its best-ever performance at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, winning seven medals, including one gold. Additionally, cricket, India’s most popular sport, has been included in the 2028 Olympics along with four other sports.

India’s aspirations for hosting the Olympics in 2036 are not unique. Poland’s President, Andrzej Duda, expressed hope for organizing the 2036 Olympics, while Indonesia and Mexico are also expected to bid for the event. Modi also announced India’s intention to host the Youth Olympics in 2029. He emphasized that sports are not just about winning medals but also about winning hearts.
