Inter edge Salzburg in Champions League to top group

Inter Milan secured a 2-1 victory over Salzburg, moving them to the top of the Champions League Group D standings. The win came courtesy of an early goal from Alexis Sanchez and a second-half penalty by Hakan Calhanoglu. Inter now have seven points from three games, following their 1-1 draw with Real Sociedad and 1-0 home win against Benfica. Salzburg sits in third place with three points, one behind second-placed Real Sociedad. Inter coach Simone Inzaghi praised his team’s performance, acknowledging the challenge posed by Salzburg. He emphasized the importance of preparing well for the upcoming away matches, recognizing the competitiveness of the Champions League.

Despite Salzburg’s young squad, they displayed no fear at the San Siro and applied pressure from the start. Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer made a quick save in response to Oscar Gloukh’s shot on target in the fourth minute. However, Inter broke the deadlock against the run of play in the 19th minute when Sanchez scored his first goal since returning to Italy. With this goal, Sanchez became the highest-scoring Chilean in the Champions League, surpassing Arturo Vidal. Although Salzburg managed to equalize through Gloukh’s strike from the edge of the box, Calhanoglu restored Inter’s lead with a penalty. Lautaro Martinez thought he had extended the advantage, but his goal was disallowed for offside. Despite Salzburg’s efforts in the closing minutes, Inter’s solid defense prevented any further threats.

Salzburg midfielder Luka Sucic acknowledged that his team had a good game overall, regretting missed opportunities in the first half. He highlighted Salzburg’s ability to challenge top teams with their style of play. It is worth noting that Salzburg’s last victory in Italy dates back to the 2009-10 Europa League group stage against Lazio.

In summary, Inter Milan’s victory over Salzburg propelled them to the top of Group D in the Champions League. Despite Salzburg’s strong performance, Inter’s early goal and penalty secured the win. Both teams recognized the competitive nature of the group and the importance of preparation for future matches.
