Ireland sweating over McCabe injury before Women’s World Cup

Ireland manager Vera Pauw expressed uncertainty about the extent of captain Katie McCabe’s injury after she rolled her ankle during a friendly against France. This occurred just two weeks before their debut Women’s World Cup campaign. McCabe initially continued playing after the incident but was later substituted as a precaution. The match ended in a 3-0 loss for Ireland in Dublin. Their next match is against World Cup co-hosts Australia on July 20.

Pauw provided details about the injury, stating that McCabe rolled her ankle after stepping on the foot of an opponent. However, she couldn’t provide a definitive assessment of the injury at that moment. Pauw expressed hope that the injury would not be severe.

Following McCabe’s departure, France took control of the game and scored two goals in first-half stoppage time through Maelle Lakrar and Eugenie Le Sommer. Lakrar added another goal in the second half. Pauw acknowledged that McCabe’s injury had a significant impact on the game, as she believed Ireland was in control before the incident. Pauw praised substitute Izzy Atkinson’s performance but emphasized that McCabe’s absence was deeply felt.
