Islanders Sign Jason Chimera

After losing fourth-liner Matt Martin to the Toronto Maple Leafs during free agency, the New York Islanders wasted no time signing Jason Chimera as his replacement for two years, $4.5-million deal per Elliotte Friedman.

In fact, Chimera could prove to be an upgrade. The 37-year-old forward potted 20 goals last season for the Washington Capitals, along with 20 assists. Martin produced less than half of that for the Islanders last season, with 10 goals and nine assists. Chimera has also proven himself to be the better skater between him and Martin.

Over the course of his long, 951-game career, Chimera has scored 163 goals and 206 assists. The Isles will be his fourth team. He’s spent his career with the Edmonton Oilers, the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Washington Capitals. Chimera also brings his 6’3″, 216 lb. frame to the Islanders, which is virtually identical to Martin’s size.

Islanders General Manager Garth Snow doesn’t appear to be done yet for this offseason. But after losing Frans Nielsen, Kyle Okposo and Martin, bringing Chimera and Andrew Ladd aboard was a good start.
