Israel Election: Netanyahu’s Future Unclear As Exit Polls Show Stalemate

Netanyahu's future unclear as exit polls forecast stalemate in Israel election
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu waves to his supporters after the first exit poll results ...

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s prospects of retention power remained unclear on Wednesday after the poll came out in fourth national election in Israel in two years, projected yet another stalemate. With the final results not maturing until the weekend, the forecast shows that even Netanyahu’s stewardship from the launch of the Covid-19 vaccination that beat the world – a showcase of his campaign – may not be enough to get him a victory in the general elections.

The initial projection by the three main Israeli TV channels after the vote on Tuesday gave Netanyahu, the right-wing Likud Party leader, an advantage, based on the potential support from ultranationalist rivals, Naftali Bennett, who once served as his defense minister. But the modified estimate indicates a deadlock even with the prospective support of Bennett, with the parliament eqaully dicided between the opponents and supporters of Netanyahu.

The Israeli opposition made a better show than expected, and support for Likud was dipped; the poll came out showing after Netanyahu’s critics highlighted corruption allegations of leaders who served the longest and accused him of mishandling the pandemic. On social media, Netanyahu claimed a “big victory” over the right-wing group, the central and rightest parties who tried to bite it – even when the TV projection failed to bear it.

He did not repeat the claim in the election night speech at the Likud Rally, by saying only that the number that the projected number of seats in parliament, around 30, was a “big achievement” – it took 36 in the previous election – and what he hoped to form “a stable right-wing government. ”

Except if there are coalition talks, which have followed in every election of Israel since the creation in 1948, broke a dead end, the fifth national vote could occur. The right Yamina Party Bennett is expected to win seven seats in the 120-member legislature.

Can he give a balanced tip will depend on the final result? Bennett, who seems to be a natural partner for Netanyahu said he would wait until before announcing the political movement. The alliance between Bennett, 48, which benefits from exemplifying parts of the West Bank occupied by Israel, and the opponent of Netanyahu on the left seems to be a political stretch.

Bennett said he would not serve under the anti-Netanyahu leader block during the campaign, 57 years old Yair Lapid, Yesh Atid’s party head. According to the poll that came out, Yesh Atid took second place with 17 to 18 parliamentary seats versus 30 to 31 for the top Likud finisher.

The Netanyahu government with Bennett and other ultranationalist clutches on the ship will result in one of the right-wing governments in Israel’s history. The possibility of maturing with Democratic President Joe Biden’s administration for problems such as Palestinian interests and involvement by Washington with Israel arch-enemy Iran over the Tehran nuclear program.

Netanyahu campaigned on his leadership credentials based on a drive that allowed nearly 50% of Israelis had received two vaccine shooting places. But allegations of bribery, fraud, and violations of trust, Netanyahu has been rejected in sustainable corruption trials. The Israeli economy suffering from the three national coronavirus lockers has burden its popularity.

Yohanan Plesner, President of the Israeli Democracy Institute, a non-partisan think tank, said the polls out showed that the country was still divided and that the fifth national election remained a real choice. “At the same time, if Bennett joined the coalition, Netanyahu was closer than before to a narrow government including the most extreme elements of the Israeli community,” Plesner said.

The dominant generation political figure, Netanyahu, 71, has been in power since 2009. But Israeli voters are polarized, with supporters calling him a “king bibi” and opponents holding the plaque calling it “Minister of Crime.”
