Israel accuses Iran of using civilian ships as 'floating terror bases'

Israel accused Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) on Monday of converting merchant ships into launch platforms for missiles, drones, and commandos.

According to Israel, the goal was to extend Tehran’s covert naval clout far beyond the Gulf.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant made the claim at a time when tensions between the regional foes are at an all-time high due to Iran’s nuclear drive and support for Palestinian and Lebanese militias.

Gallant displayed photos of six allegedly repurposed Iranian vessels, five of which were named, and claimed that they were “floating terror bases,” one of which had recently sailed toward the Gulf of Aden, at the Herzliya Conference security forum.

This is a direct result of Iranian terrorism in the Persian Gulf and Arabian Sea. Gallant claims that efforts are being made to expand operations into the Indian Ocean, followed by the Red Sea and the Mediterranean.

Iran and Israel have traded accusations over who is to blame for a series of attacks on their vessels in the Gulf over the last two years.
