Israel unvails a new spy satellite under Gallant’s supervision

Israel launched an improved version of its Ofek spy satellite, which would enhance continuous observation of the region. This is as the country prepares for a potential clash with Iran.

Notwithstanding Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s statement on Sunday that Defense Minister Yoav Gallant will be sacked in the middle of a constitutional crisis, Gallant supervised the launch. The rollout was prepared months in advance.

The Ofek-13 satellite was constructed by Israel Aerospace Industries, a government-owned firm. It is the most recent of a series of Israeli-made satellites that started circling the Earth in 1988.

The rocket was launched over the Mediterranean Sea, on a westward trajectory. Israel often selects that to avoid sensitive technology from falling into the hands of belligerent Middle Eastern neighbors. That is in the case of failure.

“We will continue to demonstrate that even the sky is not the limit for the Israeli military establishment.” Gallant said in a statement after breaking ranks with Netanyahu on Saturday. He had called for a halt to a controversial court reform plan.

The next day, Netanyahu’s announcement of Gallant’s dismissal provoked a surge of protests against the government and exacerbated US worry over Israel’s democracy and military capability.

The Ofek-13, as defined by the CEO of IAI, Boaz Levy, is “the most advanced of its kind, with unique radar observation capabilities, and will enable information collection in all weather and visibility conditions.”
