Israel's Annexation Would 'Upend' Improving Arab Ties: UAE Envoy

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) envoy to the US has warned the Israeli government on Friday over its plans to annex the parts of West Bank, saying it would upend the country’s effort in improving ties with Arab nations. On Friday, in a rare public appeal to Israelis by an Arab official, Yousef al-Otaiba said that the annexation would be an illegal occupation of lands that Palestinians seek for their state.

Otaiba wrote in an op-ed in Israel’s Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper that the move will immediately upend Israeli aspirations for improved economic, cultural, and security ties with the UAE and Arab world. In January, during the unveiling of Trump’s middle east plan in White House, Otaiba was one of the three ambassadors present there.

The plan proposed by the American president gives a green signal to Israeli annexation of West Bank and Jordan valley, albeit in line with the proposed plan. However, Trump administration faced a lot of criticism on the plan from within and internationally. Palestinian National Authority immediately rejected the plan, calling it a favor to Israeli occupation.

Meanwhile, many Israeli far-right military and political leaders have asserted that extending Israeli sovereignty over the West Bank would not slow a discreet opening between Arab countries and Israel, especially with gulf states who share the Israeli concerns over Tehran.

In recent years, because of the common concerns over Iran have led to a limited thaw in relations. However, Israel enjoys no diplomatic ties with the Gulf countries. Jordan and Egypt, being the only two countries with formal diplomatic relations with Israeli.

In early May, UAE’s Etihad made its first flight to Israel, carrying medical aid for Palestinians. It is expected that the Israeli government will start debating on annexation on July 1. However, recently an Israeli minister said that there were still differences on the issue with the US and added that the two allies have yet to agree on territorial lines.

Palestinians have maintained that they seek the land Israel occupied in the 1967 war for their independent state. They have asserted that the annexation would make it impossible and urged the international community to impose sanctions on Israel.
