Switzerland’s reign as Billie Jean King Cup champions came to an end with a loss to the United States in Seville. Italy secured a spot in the semi-finals by defeating Germany 3-0 in Group D. Canada also secured first place in Group C with wins in both singles matches against Poland, who was missing their top-ranked player. Marina Stakusic and Leylah Fernandez were the standout performers for Canada. Australia, last year’s runners-up, won against Kazakhstan but cannot qualify for the semi-finals. The United States, despite missing key players, proved too strong for Switzerland. Danielle Collins and Sofia Kenin secured victories to give the United States an unassailable lead. Kenin had a tough match but ultimately sealed the win. Italy continued their strong performance by defeating Germany and securing a spot in the semi-finals for the first time since 2014. Australia fought back after a loss to Slovenia and won their match against Kazakhstan. They will face Slovenia to determine the top spot in Group B.
