Italy secured a victory over France in their opening Group D clash at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Seville on Wednesday, with Martina Trevisan and Jasmine Paolini both winning their singles matches. In the first rubber, Trevisan overcame a slow start to defeat Alize Cornet 2-6 6-2 6-2. Paolini, on the other hand, fought back from a 4-2 deficit in the deciding set to defeat Caroline Garcia 7-6(6) 5-7 6-4 in a match that lasted two hours and 39 minutes. France will now aim to earn a point in the doubles match. Italy’s victory means they have now beaten France in five of their last seven meetings in the women’s team competition. In other Group C action, hosts Spain will face Canada later on Wednesday.
