The headlines have been talking incessantly about the Tony awards recently, droning on about James Corden’s stint as host. For me, when James Corden’s name is brought up, either in reference to his Tony hosting or his job at the helm of The Late Late Show, I wonder ‘why’? I mean, the man seems nice enough, but he is not funny in the slightest way, is not provocative with his guests and definitely does not demand the respect of his audiences with what he has to say. So, once again, I ask why?
Perhaps Hollywood was doing Corden a rare favor, saving him from his destined for disaster career in Hollywood. His leading role in Into the Woods was, in my opinion, the only thing bad about the film. His very obviously, auto-tuned sounding vocals and his hard to believe acting, drew away from what was an otherwise entertaining adaption with a stellar cast.
To Corden’s credit, he apparently has some success in the theater, of which I can claim no knowledge, but this should not warrant the roles he is now receiving in the industry. There is no shortage of theater people who would love to host the Tony Awards, and I’m sure a more appropriate host for the Late, Late Show could be found.
Corden’s recent roles are only a small part in what is a large stream of occurrences indicative of a decline in what is expected in terms of quality for television. Shows that have no business being presented to the public are popping up by the dozen, along with performers who would be more appropriate for some toddler’s backyard birthday party. James Corden is only part of the problem; I just hope that the people in power can realize the error in their actions and take the steps to fix it before things truly get out of hand.
