Musical artists and public icons have a huge impact on the culture of the world we live in today. Many people place value upon their opinions on certain topics and issues. One of the most influential people in the last decade has been Jay-Z. The rapper, music mogul, and businessman has had a lasting impact on the hip hop community and the world as a whole. Jay-Z is making headlines once again as he comments on the United States efforts to control the distribution of drugs in the country. According to CNN, Jay-Z has publicly called the United States war on drugs a complete failure. These comments have gained the attention of people all over the world.

Jay-Z is commenting on the differences between white and black drug distributors in the United States. BBC News reports that he released a video discussing the issues. In it, he is pointing out that the war on drugs, which started in the 1980s, is targeting minorities. Jay-Z comments on mass incarceration in the United States and that mandatory minimum sentencing is the reason for the heavy increase in the prison population of the United States.

Jay-Z has made his past a secret. The artist has often discussed in interviews as well as in his own music his time as a drug dealer in New York. While he has changed his lifestyle, the artist is still not happy with the treatment of minority men and women dealing in drugs. BBC News also reports that the video released touched on the legalization of marijuana in the state of Colorado. Jay-Z points out that white men are able to profit off of the distribution of marijuana in states that have recently legalized the drug, but minority men and women who deal with the drug are not able to participate in this trade if they have a past criminal record. Furthermore, many men and women are in prison for non-violent drug offenses involving the sale and distribution of marijuana.
