Jeremy Clarkson column on Meghan was sexist, UK press regulator rules

Britain’s press regulator, the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO), has deemed a column by TV personality Jeremy Clarkson in the Sun newspaper as sexist. In the column, Clarkson expressed his hope that Prince Harry’s wife Meghan would one day be forced to parade naked through the streets. This breached the Editors’ Code of Practice by containing a pejorative and prejudicial reference to Meghan’s sex. The column, published in December 2022 and subsequently withdrawn by the Sun, received widespread condemnation from the public, politicians, Clarkson’s employers, and even his own daughter. Clarkson had written that he hated Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, on a “cellular level.” IPSO received over 25,000 complaints about the column, making it the most complained-about article. Clarkson and the Sun apologized, but IPSO initiated an investigation based on complaints from two women’s charities – the Fawcett Society and the WILDE Foundation. As a result, IPSO has instructed the Sun to publish a summary of the findings against it, written by IPSO, on the same page where the column usually appears. This summary will be flagged on the paper’s front page in print and on the sun.co.uk website. Edward Faulks, the chair of IPSO, stated that the imagery used by Clarkson in the article was humiliating and degrading towards Meghan. However, IPSO did not uphold other aspects of the complaint, including allegations of inaccuracy, harassment, and discriminatory references based on race. Harry and Meghan have frequently been targets of ridicule in British tabloids, especially since their decision to step back from their royal roles in 2020 and relocate to California. Currently, Prince Harry is suing MGN, the publisher of the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror, and Sunday People, over allegations of phone-hacking dating back to 2011 and earlier. MGN denies any evidence of hacking Harry’s phone.
