Nobel Prize Winner John Hume died this Monday.

John Hume, a Northern Ireland politician and the Nobel Peace Prize winner, passed away on Monday following a protracted illness in the Londonderry nursing home, where he had been staying.

John Hume was a founding member of the Social Democratic and Labour Party- a nationalist political party in Northern Ireland that has succeeded in its nonviolent political commitments to connect the Northern Ireland and the Irish republic.

In 2010, John Hum was named “Ireland’s Greatest Person in the Country’s History”.

The SDL Party expressed their gratitude to the works of John Hume in a tweet. “We all live in Ireland, he imagined – at peace and free to decide our own destiny,” the tweet reads. One of its members and also well-known Irish Politician Patsy McGlone also expressed his grief in a tweet. He said that John Hume helped deliver the peace that is so much taken for granted now.

Irish Government Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Defence Simon Coveney also expressed his condolences to John Hume’s family. He said Hume was an extraordinary man, peacemaker, politician, leader, civil rights campaigner. He added that he is also a good family man.

Well-known Irish stage and screenwriter Lisa Mcgee also expressed her condolences. She thanked John for the legacy he left saying, “You gave us peace, now rest in it.”

Economist and news broadcaster David McWilliam, for his part, said, “We should never underestimate how wonderful a leader [John] was in the very dark times for our country.”

All About John Hume

John Hume has been a political activist since the civil rights movement years, which started in the late 1960s. Back then, he joined the MPs in a 48-hour hunger strike to protest at the imprisonment without trial of hundreds of suspected Irish republicans.

He has been an active peacemaker during the time of The Troubles, which was a series of violent occurrences driven by nationalistic and political conflicts in Northern Ireland during the late 20th century. Although the Troubles primarily took place in Northern Ireland, it is known that the violence and “low-level war” also occurred in some parts of the Republic of Ireland, England, and mainland Europe.

One of his legacies is his contribution to the peace talks that led to the Good Friday Agreement in 1998- the solution to the end of the Troubles. The agreement settled issues relating to sovereigntycivil and cultural rights, the justice system, and other governmental issues between the Northern Island, the Republic of Ireland the Government of the UK.

John also served as a Member of the European Parliament and a Member of the UK Parliament. He retired from politics in 2004.

Aside from winning the Nobel Peace Prize, He was also a recipient of the Gandhi Peace Prize and the Martin Luther King Award. So far, he is the only person known to be a recipient of the three major peace awards.

Through a statement from SDL Party which was released to the media, his family expressed their gratitude to the people who supported John and most especially to the nursing staff of Owen Mor nursing home in Derry, who took care of John until his last breath.
