Chris Kyle, the famous Navy SEAL “American Sniper” killed 160 people while serving as a sniper in Iraq. His kill count is the highest in United States history. After returning from Iraq as a legend, he published a top-grossing book, “American Sniper,” which was later turned into a movie directed by Clint Eastwood, starring Bradley Cooper.

Almost 800 people were called into question in Erath County as potential jurors and according to Judge Hason Cashon, “It’s OK if you’ve seen the movie.”

With so much movie publicity and Kyle’s story so well known, many are wondering is a fair trial is going to be possible. According to Geoffrey Corn, a retired lieutenant colonel and law professor at South Texas College of Law in Houston TX, “The law doesn’t require that the juror have no knowledge of the people involved, just that the juror can set aside preconceived notions and judge the case based on the facts and the law. That’s what the voir dire process is set up for — so that lawyers and the judge can probe the jurors’ ability to do that.”

Kyle and Littlefield were at a shooting range with Routh, who is said to have been suffering from an intense case of PTSD, when the murders took place. Routh was hospitalized weeks earlier due to his mental state. He then stole Kyle’s truck and drove to his sister’s home where he was later captured and confessed to the murders. His lawyers will try to prove that he was insane when the murders took place and according to the prosecutor they will not be seeking the death penalty.
